Can I obtain life insurance with HIV?

A number of years ago, the answer would almost definitely have been no. Life insurance companies simply would not have taken the risks associated with HIV. However, since treatment advances, including Triple Therapy Treatment, the life insurance market for HIV has opened. This is arguably one of the biggest developments in life insurance over the past decade.

Those living from HIV can now apply for and access life insurance cover, thus protecting their loved ones from the worst-case scenario. However, there are still some restrictions in place with regards to cover and terms. Some companies may still decline cover if they believe you are too high risk. For example, a history of drug use could trigger this kind of outcome.

This is why it is essential to speak to a Broker who understands the Life Insurance market and how it relates to HIV. We will help you locate such an expert.

What questions will I be asked about my HIV?

Life insurance companies will likely ask you a number of questions about your personal history and HIV. They do so in order to calculate what kind of risks come with offering you life insurance. It is important to be 100% honest during the application stage as the insurance companies will often contact your doctor for detailed information anyway. The questions these companies may ask you could include, but are not limited to:

  • When were you diagnosed with HIV?
  • Where were you diagnosed?
  • What is your viral load?
  • What is your current CD4 count?
  • Are you on any medication? If so, what medication?
  • Did you contract HIV through drug use?
  • Do you have any history of drug use?
  • Does your GP know that you have HIV?
  • Do you have any history of hepatitis B or C?

Do all Life Insurance companies charge the same for HIV?

The short answer is no, different insurance companies charge different prices for people living with HIV.

Although leaps and bounds have been made in the areas of HIV treatment and HIV insurance, there is still a long way to go. The majority of companies will still charge above standard rate prices for HIV cover as it is still seen as a high-risk condition. Even if your condition is well-managed, you are living a normal life, and your viral load is not detectable, you should still expect to pay an additional premium.

If an insurance company believes that your condition could result in an early death, then they will likely increase the cover charges. Having said that, rates have improved over the past five years, so  the market is evolving all the time.

The entire reason behind this website is to provide you with the best up-to-date information on finding insurances with medical conditions, allowing you to make an informed choice. The hard part is finding the perfect company for you, offering the cheapest premium going. Always be honest about your condition and the extent of your condition. If your pre-existing condition improves then be sure to review your cover immediately.

What is HIV?

There are around 100,000 people living with HIV across the UK. Unfortunately, 17% of these sufferers do not realise that they have the condition. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus and it damages the cells within a person’s immune system. This weakens that person’s ability to fight against infections and diseases. The virus is spread through the transfer of bodily fluids. Unfortunately, HIV is currently a lifelong condition as there is no known cure. However, experts have made great progress in HIV treatment, preventing the immune system from extreme damage. Most patients can still live a regular life, as long as they receive treatment. Two-thirds of those living with HIV in the UK are male and 60% accessing care for the condition are aged between 35 and 54. Two out of every five HIV sufferers are diagnosed late. To this day, people who are living with HIV can remain undiagnosed for a long time. The symptoms associated with HIV include flu-like feelings, such as a fever, aches, rashes, fatigue, sickness, diarrhoea, and a sore throat. The asymptomatic stage can follow these early signs, in which a person remains symptom-free for a long period of time. The symptomatic phase occurs when the human body can no longer fight against infection and disease. AIDS can later be diagnosed when certain illnesses take hold.
